Trailblazers and leaders: Godwin Ekoriko
Godwin Ekoriko | Senior Communications and Engagement Manager | Changing the Narrative/National Institute for Health and Social Care
How did you get into marketing/comms?
Interesting story, I started my career as a journalist. At the time, I was working for a magazine and was tasked to work on a country report project with the head of marketing at the time. The experience was eye opening and I got to see the different side of journalism in the sense of how we had to reach out to organisations.
This wasn't the case as in journalism, we usually get approached to tell an organisation's story. This fascination led me to begin my career in the field.
What is something that you do every day without fail?
Smile. This is important as you never know what others are going through. Be kind to others and the universe has a way of re adding you.
What is the best piece of advice that you’ve received? And who gave it to you?
My manager in one of my previous roles was like. Godwin you do amazing work that no one sees. You have to make others see your work. What's the point of building a bridge if no one knows it exists?
This has stuck with me in everything I do. I make a conscious effort to stay visible and let my work speak for itself.
What is a tool/hack that you would recommend to anyone starting out in PR/Comms/Marketing?
Google. Everything can be learned if you are willing to put the work in.
What’s your greatest achievement to date?
I have interviewed the current president of Ghana and the previous president of Finland.
Is there a particular comms campaign that you’ve seen in your career that you didn’t work on but wish you had?
I was fascinated with a lot of the apple campaigns and wish to work on a few. I remember buying the iPhone 12 pro after watching their launch event. The production, the marketing, everything got me.
I'm a wiser man now, I hope. Videos still get to me.
In three words, describe your approach to your role/work?
I am very analytical and evidence based in my approach. This helps in the past to convince the naysayers. When I want to change people's minds on a project, way of working or campaign. I am analytical and use the data to create change. Constantly evaluating and evolving is also beneficial in keeping up with a fast-moving world.
What’s a question every PR/marketing pro should ask themselves?
Why am I doing what I did last year other than if it works don't change it?
