#UKBCNPresents: 5 key takeaways from our Innovation & Influence session.

As lockdown life continues, we're doing nothing but work and bingeing boxsets so we’re taking the time to learn and run with new ideas to keep our skills fresh.

Our Innovation & Influence event, held last Thursday (04/02/2021), brought together four leading ladies (virtually) from major international brands to chat all things campaigns, brand and experiential marketing.

With a space full of insightful behind the scenes perspectives, we discussed how to come up with ideas in a multi discipline environment, ways to push and pivot ideas during a pandemic and the power of a PR super celebrity.

The panel

  • Naomi Walkland, Director EMEA Marketing Bumble

  • Clara Biu, Head of PR & Events Just Eat

  • Hannah Ngakane, Strategic Partnerships Pinterest UK

  • Sasha Mattus, Account Director Hope & Glory PR

Our very own Tarita Mullings, Head of Brand and Partnerships hosted our panel to share insights, perspectives, and stories about how they innovate, and influence adverts and content that we see every day.

Here are four key takeaways from the event:

1.   The best ideas can come from anywhere. Work in a space where you can have cross functional meetings with different departments so you’re comfortable to pitch an idea with different teams. Don't worry about being rejected. Just be comfortable to express ideas.

2. There’s an approach you can try called: ‘finish, focused and fixed’. It’s a quick catch up to check in with different teams to say what needs to be finished, what needs a focus and what needs to be resolved or fixed. It’s important to keep the catch-up brief, perhaps for 20 minutes so you can get round the whole team. It’s a great way to learn from those around you and finish the day motivated.

3.   Try to solve the problems that you know the business or client has. The key is to build relationships and understand what your clients do day-to-day. If you orbit a company externally you won’t understand what goes on so sit with the teams, attend meetings, understand the process of sign off. Ask the right questions: ‘what are you worried about’ and hear the experiences first-hand to know how to solve any creative problem in an innovative way.

4. Always be prepared for an element of negativity, even if your aim is to bring joy and entertain. There will always be some who don’t understand or don’t ‘get’ your campaign and that’s OK.

5.   Think: ‘what are the great campaigns that you can promote further and wider to make an impact?’ Don’t let a lack of budget be a hurdle. Think of ways to partner with other people you admire to showcase their talent too. It will allow budgets to go further and you can take the best parts of each other to show influence.

Thank you to our four amazing, industry leading contributors and everyone who attended. If you are a member and you missed the event you can catch up here.
